My Life as a Corporate Goddess BookcoverGreetings Everyone!

It’s Women’s History Month and an excellent reason to celebrate our goddess-selves every glorious day in March. I suggest we begin by acknowledging all of the amazing women who came before us and made it possible for us to be where we are today. Then, have a piece of chocolate. And then, get inspired to make a little history of our own. How? Well, for starters – how about coming together to speak out for change.

I’ve talked with corporate goddesses all over the country and the consensus seems to be that we are not moving forward. No sirree-bubb! The feeling is that we are sliding backwards. There is mounting frustration with the status quo.

Well, things won’t magically get better. So, this month, get together with other women to celebrate our month, and take action. After all, ~ what’s a girl gotta do to make some changes around here?

~ Come Together, Right Now ~

Ya know, I used to stay away from women’s groups. I was really busy, overwhelmed most of the time and I didn’t have time for any groups, or time to pee for that matter. I was particularly resistant to the concept of women’s groups. I guess I had this preconceived notion that we’d all sit around and talk about breast feeding, or bitch about our not equal-partner husbands, or whine about that idiot boss who apparently earned his promotion on the Peter-Principle Plan.

I was focused on my work, busily conquering my own little piece of the world. Oh sure, I felt isolated being the only woman among my peers. It was a world of men and me.

If only I knew then what I know now.

I am constantly impressed with the quality of sisterhood within the professional women’s groups that I’ve been fortunate to know. From internal corporate organizations to the various national, regional and citywide groups, there is nothing better than being in a room with a group of brilliant women. It’s a wonderful experience of camaraderie. We empower each other to achieve great things, to follow our dreams and to take leadership seriously.

So, now is the time to come together. If there is a women’s forum in your company, join it. If there’s a professional organization for women in your field, sign up. If any of these seem lame in their current form, then get a few of your friends to join with you and stir things up. Create the world you want.

Find your passion and work together, ladies. It may feel good to sit around and talk about the things that make you crazy, but, only you can change them. You can begin by changing your relationship to the frustration. Gain some objectivity. And from there, you will know what peaceful action you can take to move the situation toward positive change. Positive resolution toward powerful revolution – that has a nice ring to it.

Build the momentum. Look at Nancy Pelosi. She is proud to be a role model for young women who can see that it IS possible for a woman to be speaker of the house. So why not president? Exactly.

If you’re a woman in a senior leadership role, then be a positive role model for the women of your company. Inspire them. Take the time to admit that you are not one of the boys. You may sit next to them, you may even make the same amount of money as they do, although, statistically, I doubt it. But, you will never be one of the boys, so why not be a role model to the women who work under you? Be supportive of them. You’re in a position to make change in that old corporate culture, so what are you waiting for?

Lend each other a hand, help each other out.

And, Goddesses, let your light shine. Celebrate yourself everyday this month, and next month, and the month after that and so on. We have a lot of work to do, and we sure as hell better have a good time doing it.

So, make room for the goddess in you and the goddess next to you. Put your best foot forward, in your favorite shoes, and lead the way.

~ In the News ~

The Portland Business Journal published my article, Improving the Bottom Line Begins with Balance at the Top. However, some surfer-dude-editor deemed it necessary to change the title to, Want better financial results? Then hire more women, dude. (Ugh!!!) click the link to read the full article. Have any of you ever heard me use the word, “dude”?

... to the Women’s Forum at Genworth Financial in Richmond, Virginia. Thank you for inviting me to get the momentum going for Women’s History Month. I have absolute faith that you are going to make the world a better place to work and play in.
